YMMV, but from my experience — Zigbee works great in my case.
GadgetGuru: Honestly, I'd go with OpenHAB over Vera for reliability. Keep in mind the learning curve.

Totally agree — I had the exact problem and got it working by recreating the automation. Took me longer than expected that setting.
